This group explores how patients can utilize mindfulness as awareness of core unhealthy defenses that they are tempted to enact. We change behavioral patterns through being present to our underlying thoughts and feelings. We thereby decline to act out in ways that seem defensive, unneeded, and in some way harmful (anticipating the triggers is key), gaining a deeper capacity to accept our internal states while also altering deeper patterns of experience. Utilizes brief meditation, writing and dynamic talk therapy.

The group helps patients to verbalize and feel their fantasies, constructive ones and those that may be destructive or in some other way unhealthy, often unconscious and based on distortion. How to be free from and change certain fantasies while embodying others is a focus. Participants will have some opportunities to present creative work involving fantasy, if they so choose, and brief meditation will be employed in this relational psychodynamic therapy group.
